Before You Go

A few useful things to know before planning your journey through Vietnam.

Vietnam can be visited throughout the year, but the weather varies considerably from north to south. Northern Vietnam tends to have cooler winters and warmer, wetter summers, while Central Vietnam follows a different seasonal pattern with its own wetter months. Southern Vietnam stays warm year-round, with more clearly defined dry and rainy seasons.

Because of this, there is no single “best month” for the whole country. The ideal timing depends on the regions you plan to visit and the type of experience you want, whether that means mountain landscapes, heritage cities, countryside journeys or coastal time.

For a first journey, around 10–14 days is a comfortable starting point. This allows enough time to combine several regions while still travelling at a relaxed pace.

With around one week, it is usually better to focus on one or two areas, such as the north or central Vietnam, rather than trying to cover the entire country. With two weeks or more, you can combine Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Central Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta more comfortably.

If you have three weeks or longer, there is more room for slower travel, mountain areas, smaller towns and experiences beyond the main highlights.

Vietnam offers a wide range of destinations, and the best route depends on your interests. Hanoi is ideal for culture, food and everyday city life, while Ha Giang offers dramatic mountain scenery and highland communities. Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay are known for limestone landscapes, while Hue and Hoi An provide a strong sense of heritage and tradition.

Further south, Ho Chi Minh City offers a more energetic urban experience, while the Mekong Delta reveals a slower rhythm shaped by rivers, orchards and local communities.

Rather than choosing destinations only by popularity, we recommend building a route around the kind of journey you want to have.

Yes. Oriva Journeys can shape a Vietnam itinerary around your interests, travel dates, preferred pace and the experiences that matter most to you.

Some travellers want to focus on food and culture, while others prefer nature, local communities, heritage, photography or a slower journey with fewer stops. We can adjust the route, accommodation style and daily rhythm accordingly.

The goal is not simply to fit as many places as possible into the itinerary, but to create a journey that feels balanced, personal and realistic for the time you have available.

Vietnam offers far more than its major landmarks. Depending on your interests, your journey can include local markets, street food, traditional craft villages, family-run workshops, cycling through the countryside, mountain walks, river journeys and regional cooking experiences.

You can also spend time discovering the everyday side of each destination, from neighbourhood cafés and village life to local customs and seasonal traditions.

At Oriva, we aim to combine well-known highlights with smaller, more personal experiences so that each place feels more connected to the people and stories behind it.

Yes. Vietnam is a strong introduction to Southeast Asia because it offers a wide variety of experiences within one country. Travellers can experience historic cities, mountain landscapes, coastal areas, regional cuisine and rural communities without needing to cross multiple borders.

The country also has a well-established tourism infrastructure, with a broad range of accommodation and transport options.

For first-time visitors, the key is not to travel too quickly. A well-paced itinerary makes the journey easier to enjoy and leaves enough time to experience both the major sights and the quieter moments in between.
